The Philharmonic Society of Orange County is one of the country’s most prestigious presenting organizations, dedicated to bringing the world’s most celebrated symphony orchestras and international artists to the region. We provide free music education programs that reach more than 100,000 students each year throughout the county and surrounding areas. Our programs include the annual Laguna Beach Music Festival, the Orange County Youth Symphony, and various concerts and educational and community engagement events.
The Committees of the Philharmonic Society are the organization’s volunteer force and one of its principal fundraising sources. More than 70,000 hours of in-kind service are provided each year by 500 volunteer members in implementing and evaluating the Philharmonic Society’s youth music education programs completely free of charge to the community.
Founded in 1970, the Orange County Youth Symphony & String Ensemble (OCYS/E) is the official youth orchestra of Orange County, and integrated with the Philharmonic Society in the 2017-18 season. Our diverse roster represents student musicians from nearly 50 high school and college programs from all over Orange County. The musicians of OCYS/E have exciting opportunities to engage with some of classical music’s most celebrated artists through master classes with Philharmonic Society artists, along with open rehearsals and enriching experiences attending Philharmonic Society concerts throughout each season.
Key Responsibilities
- Full responsibility for all youth and adult education and engagement programs of the Philharmonic Society, including planning and implementation
- Seek new opportunities and design appropriate programs to expand educational offerings
- In consultation with Senior staff, expand community engagement in targeted demographics consistent with the overall vision of the Philharmonic Society
- Oversee, manage and evaluate existing education programs and community engagement activities to inform program improvements and support related fundraising initiatives
- Ensure that programs adhere to current curricular standards; develop and update programs as appropriate
- Plan, create, manage, reconcile and demonstrate accountability for education and community engagement components of the Society budget and resources
- Work collaboratively with district level VAPA coordinators, Orange County Department of Education, and Orange County Music and Art Administrators to ensure optimal program delivery and performance
- Ensure the timely and effective communication of all details of education programs and community engagement activities to appropriate Philharmonic Society staff and community and cultural partners for execution by production, marketing, development and partnership personnel
- Work with the Marketing and Development Departments to build programs that effectively support sponsor and donor relationships and maximize earned income (where applicable) and visibility in Orange County and the surrounding communities
- In consultation with the Marketing Department, communicate and promote education and community engagement programs to defined target markets
- Work in conjunction with and cultivate school, performing arts, and civic and cultural partnerships to establish on-going productive relationships and capitalize on combined partnerships, shared resources, cross promotion and creative programming
- Serve as primary education and community engagement representative of the Philharmonic Society
- Identify education trends that may present new opportunities for the Philharmonic Society; recommend a course of action that takes this information into account
- Develop survey and assessment tools to measure the outcomes and impact of education and community engagement programs
- Stay informed of local and national education policies and maintain relationships with school administration and teaching personnel
- Keep current on local and national music education programming by other organizations
- Oversee and evaluate the work of the Education and Engagement Department:
The Education and Engagement team administrates all Committees’ supported music education programs including Concerts for 2nd, 5th and 6th Grade, Music Mobile, California Journeys, Musicians on Campus, Ensembles on Tour, High School Orchestra Festival, Strike Up the Band, and special education programs.
With the Manager of Volunteer and Education Services:
- Work with volunteer chairmen of youth programs and concerts to produce programs
- Select appropriate dates and locations for youth programs
- Produce enrollment materials, reports and labels for youth programs
- Evaluate youth programs annually
- Engage musicians and teaching artists as required
- Identify and secure appropriate venues for programs; work with stakeholders on concert production
- Create or supervise the creation of curriculum related teacher resources and audience engagement materials
- Attend youth concerts as manager, working volunteer duties if needed
- Work with The Committees and outside organizations on arts advocacy
- Oversee volunteer communications and appreciation
- Oversee and guide the direction of the Philharmonic Society’s Orange County Youth Symphony:
- Work with volunteer chairperson of OCYS/E to ensure long term planning remains current
- Collaborate with OCYS/E Music Director on season repertoire, season planning, budgeting, and future plans.
- Supervise OCYS/E General Manager to ensure smooth operation of day-to-day operations, weekly rehearsals, and season performances.
- Coordinate master classes and coachings with Philharmonic Society engaged soloists and orchestras.
- Oversee budget planning and implementation.
- Attend rehearsals as necessary.
- Attend all OCYS/E Season Concerts.
- Along with Marketing Department, oversee and ensure the production and accuracy of all OCYS/E assets for recruitment, enrollment materials, and concert programs.
- Create and manage annual department budget, working with President and Artistic Director, The Committees leadership, and Orange County Youth Symphony leadership
- Attend monthly meetings with The Committees leadership
- Attend Board of Directors and Executive Board meetings to discuss education activities
- Represent the Education Department of the Philharmonic Society at meetings of The Committees, and with community organizations, county-wide educational institutions, and education groups
- In consultation with Development team and Grant Writer, provide supporting information for the Philharmonic Society’s education programs in order to administer grants.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in music education or arts administration required; Master’s Degree or other advanced training in music education or arts administration preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working as an in-school music educator or working in the performing arts required; preference will be given to candidates with successful experience of 5 years or more administering education programs for a professional orchestra or performing arts organization
- Understanding or familiarity with education and curriculum standards
- Experience managing or supervising a team; ability to effectively work with others as a contributing partner
- Effective and efficient written and oral communications skills
- Thorough understanding of music education, music education research, local education and performing arts initiatives
- Knowledge of symphonic repertoire and instrumentation preferred
- Must be able to work effectively with artists, musicians, staff, community leaders and volunteers

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County seeks a creative and strategic thought partner to join our team as Director of Marketing. This position will create and manage programs to drive and execute strategies that facilitate and elevate awareness of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and its work in the community. The Director of Marketing will foster an environment of collaboration and ensure that brand positioning, narratives and cohesive messaging is meaningfully incorporated into all organization assets and across channels. This position will also develop and execute marketing campaigns for the season, and oversee reporting of concert ticket sales and audience development campaigns.

Marketing
- Develop and manage a variety of activities and programs to elevate brand awareness and create cohesive, mission-driven messaging across all functions of the organization.
- Develop annual, short- and long-term branding and marketing initiatives, strategy and plans.

Philharmonic Society’s interns gain valuable hands-on experience in the arts industry, working alongside professionals in the field and learning the behind-the-scenes processes of an arts organization.
The Education and Community Engagement Department offers a valuable opportunity for students enrolled in a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level or a recent graduate to enhance their academic experience with a non-paid, hands-on internship. Interns provide administrative assistance to support the coordination of music programs and concerts for students in elementary through high school held in schools and at various venues in Orange County including Segerstrom Center for the Arts as well as for adults. The intern will be exposed to the many facets of the administrative office responsible for the operation of the Education department and the concerts of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Interns will learn how a non-profit arts organization operates as well as the logistics involved with producing, implementing, and evaluating music education programs that closely align to the California Department of Education curriculum standards. Programs include but are not limited to Music Mobile (3rd grade), California Journeys (4th grade), Concerts for 2nd, 5th, and 6th graders, the High School Orchestra Festival, Musicians on Campus, and the Orange County Youth Symphony, and typically serve 160,000 students annually. The Education Intern reports to the Vice President of Education and Community Engagement and works closely with the Director of Volunteer and Education Services and various Philharmonic Society staff and volunteers.
Internships are unpaid and require a minimum of 12-15 hours a week (scheduling is flexible) during regular office hours, Monday – Friday, 9 am – 5 pm, or off-site at schools and various venues throughout Orange County. Weekends and/or evenings may apply depending on programming and scheduling. The Philharmonic Society of Orange County does not provide housing, transportation, or relocation costs. Business attire in the office and at concert and school settings.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the implementation of on-site concerts and programs, checking in and/or guiding students from buses to the concert hall and related administrative tasks to support the successful operation of a program
- Preparation of directions and instructions for transportation to venues and tabulations of attendance at programs to assist with seating
- Assist with research and preparation of Teacher Resource Guides and related educator materials for concerts and programs
- Assisting with the reservations, confirmations, and communications to schools for program and concert reservations and day of event logistics
- Updating and drafting information on music education programs for promotional purposes and web site updates
- Summarize and organize applications and program information for the annual High School Orchestra Festival
- E-mail communication to educators and administrators about upcoming programs
- Respond to inquiries about education programs
- Data entry to update schools, artists, and venue contact information

Qualifications:
Interns must demonstrate initiative, creativity, and a willingness to learn the operations of Education and community engagement in a non-profit setting, have strong computer skills with an emphasis on using Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Survey Monkey and others, strong written and oral skills, organization skills, and the ability to perform multiple tasks with attention to detail. They must maintain a professional attitude and be able to interface successfully with a variety of personalities. Strong customer service ability and flexibility required. Music performance and/or music education major or minor at a local college or university is preferred. Interest in classical music, teaching at the K-12 level a plus. A background check will be conducted on interns who will be working with students/children at schools or in various venues across Orange County.

The Marketing & Public Relations Intern will assist with the development and writing of press releases, media pitching, event work, research, and assist with general preparation for the concert season. Intern will have an opportunity to develop and execute at least one special promotion/event. Must have interest in marketing, public relations and music. Will perform some clerical and administrative duties as needed.
Time Commitment:
