Audition applications are OPEN for the Orange County Youth Symphony’s 2018-19 season! The deadline to apply is Friday, June 15.


  • All musicians participating in their respective school/college string, band, or orchestral program.
  • All incoming eighth through twelfth grade and college instrumental musicians residing in or near Orange County.
  • Private instruction on your instrument is strongly encouraged.

  • The Audition

  • Auditions take place on Saturday, June 2, Sunday, June 10, and Saturday, June 23 at Chapman University.
  • The audition lasts approximately 10 minutes. Warm-up rooms are available 30 minutes before your scheduled time.
  • All instruments are required to prepare three components for the audition. Adjudicators will choose selections of each prepared area:
  • one solo of choice (ex: sonata, suite, concerto) without pianist;
  • selected orchestral excerpts;
  • scale(s)

  • Follow the instructions here to apply. You may choose your audition day; a time will be automatically assigned to you. If you need to reschedule, contact us. Note that rescheduling is not guaranteed.
  • For those unavailable to audition in-person, recorded auditions are accepted on a case-by-case basis (not preferred). Request our recorded audition policy if you must audition via recording.
  • A $35 non-refundable application fee is required to audition.

  • Admission Decision

  • Applicants will be notified of admission decision via email after the final audition day on June 10.
  • Accepted students will be offered a seat in the 2018-19 season. Note our updated seating policy:
  • Winds, Brass, Harp, Percussion, Timpani: All 18-19 positions will be assigned based on audition performance.
  • Strings: Season principal positions for violin, viola, cello, and bass sections (Concertmaster, Associate Concertmaster, Principals, and Associate Principals) will be assigned based on audition performance. All other accepted string musicians will be guaranteed seats for the season. Two seating exams (one in August, the second in January) will determine placement for the first and second halves of the season.
  • Commitment: If you are admitted and choose to accept, a deposit of $300 will be required to secure your seat. The remaining balance of $800 will be due by August 12. Full season tuition payment of $1,100 may be submitted at commitment.
  • Financial Assistance: Installment payments are available upon request. Limited tuition assistance is available on a case-by-case basis to qualified students. Contact us to inquire about assistance after the admission decision.
