In 2007-2008, the Philharmonic Society will sponsor the following nationally recognized music outreach programs. Members of The Committees of Philharmonic Society, the principal fundraising and volunteer force of the Society, implement these programs. All programs are presented at no charge to schools, students or parents.
In-School Programs

Kindergarten - First Grade: Music and Movement
Lively workshops for teachers who want to capture the creative process of music, integrating reading, math and motor skills. These workshops are presented as an in-service event at selected school districts.

Third Grade: Musical Me
The Philharmonic Society’s newest program will pilot this year, bringing the joy of classical music into third grade classrooms in selected Tustin schools. Musical Me is a daily CD listening program that exposes children to an extensive array of classical music throughout the school year. Teachers have pre-researched information to read and suggested questions to ask their students to supplement the CD’s, encouraging in-depth learning and focused listening.

Third Grade: Music Mobile
The Music Mobile "fleet" consists of two fully equipped vans. Each is filled with instruments and visual aids that introduce the symphony orchestra and important musical concepts. Philharmonic Society docents present the program and allow the students to have a hands-on experience with the instruments.

Fourth Grade: California Journeys
A new pilot program in conjunction with the Bowers Museum taking students on a journey into the history of art, music and dance of the state of California.

Fourth, Fifth & Sixth Grades: Meet the Musicians
Professional brass, woodwind, string and percussion groups visit virtually all the public elementary schools in the county for performances and demonstrations. Meet the Musicians is one of the largest programs of its type in the United States. The program is presented in cooperation with the Music Performance Fund.

Fourth, Fifth & Sixth Grades: Workshops and Assemblies
As opportunities present themselves, the Society presents workshops and assemblies that coordinate with regular Philharmonic Society concert presentations.

Intermediate Schools: Ensembles on Tour
Created to appeal to middle school students, this program features professional groups performing for the whole student body a variety of music styles and instrumentations. The program is presented in cooperation with the Music Performance Fund.

High Schools: Partnership with Orange County High School of the Arts
Gifted students at OCHSA will meet with many of the artists in town for the Laguna Chamber Music Festival or other Philharmonic Society presentations.
Concerts

Second Grade: Disneyland Resort Salutes the American Band
Through short, narrated musical selections, the Disneyland Band introduces musical instruments and traces the heritage of American band music from the 19th century to the present. This program was created for second graders by Disneyland in cooperation with the Philharmonic Society and the Orange County Music & Art Administrators. Eleven pairs of concerts are held at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center and other venues throughout the county.

Fifth Grade: Concerts for Fifth Graders
Four pairs of concerts explore orchestral music in its historical and cultural contexts. Programs, which take place in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, feature the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Alfred Wachs and dancers from the Anaheim Ballet. Compact discs and worksheets are provided for student preparation. The concerts are presented in cooperation with Las Campanas, the Orange County Department of Education, and Chapman University.

Sixth Grade: Ancient Grooves
Concerts that feature a quintet of musicians performing on unusual musical instruments from around the world. They compose, arrange and perform unique compositions to show that people of all cultures have exciting and inspiring music to share. The concerts demonstrate that music is the universal language.

High Schools Art and Music
The Philharmonic Society and Orange County Museum of Art collaborate on this special experience for high school students. The music program is developed to complement and enhance the art exhibit.

High Schools: Tix for Teens
Free tickets for regular Philharmonic Society series concerts are offered to all Orange County high schools to integrate students into the adult concert-going experience.

Musical Reinvestment
A percentage of funds raised by The Committees are invested in music for their local communities.

Scholarships
Scholarships are sponsored by the Philharmonic Society for music students at University of California, Irvine, Chapman University and California State University, Fullerton. The Society offers a scholarship to the winner of the Orange County District of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, an annual high school vocal award in the Newport-Mesa School District, and an award to a member of the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The Youth Music Education Programs of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County are partially funded by Disneyland Resort, the cities of Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo and Newport Beach, the Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights®, John and Donna Crean, the Orange County Musicians’ Association Local 7 AFM, Fluor Corporation, Pacific Life Foundation, Target, Toyota Motor Sales, Inc., Wells Fargo Foundation, Weingart Foundation, the Orange County Register, the Philharmonic House of Design, and the American Federation of Musicians Music Performance Fund.
