The Committees of the Philharmonic Society are the Society's principal fund raising and volunteer force. More than 70,000 hours of in-kind service are provided each year by the 800 volunteer members in developing, implementing and evaluating the music education programs. The Committees also present a wide variety of fundraising events, including the Philharmonic House of Design and the Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights®.

Each of our 16 Committees and 5 groups participates in one or more of the following county-wide endeavors:

FUNDRAISING:
- Philharmonic House of Design
- Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights®

EDUCATION:
- Ushering at 2nd and 5th grade concerts
- Taking the Music Mobile to schools to introduce the instruments of the Orchestra
- Docenting at California Journeys

Our Committees raise funds in imaginative and delightful ways. Bringing education programs to schools within our areas is a vital part of our mission.

There are a wide variety of groups to choose from, and at least one will meet at a time and place convenient to you. Each committee has its own unique personality! Read what we say about ourselves and feel free to visit one or all as our guest.

All members participate in our signature fundraiser, the Cruise of Lights®. We encourage members to get involved with our other fundraisers, and children's music education programs, concerts, and activities.

Our members join us from all over Huntington Beach, including Huntington Harbour, as well as other Orange County areas. We would love to meet you!

SANTA ANA COMMITTEE

Location: Santa Ana
Meetings: 3rd Tuesday, October - April at 9:30am, September & May at 6:30pm

Our Committee meets in a member’s home in September and May. It is a potluck in September and May is catered followed by installation of new officers. Other months, we get together at 9:30am at the Tustin Meadows Clubhouse for a social time followed by a meeting at 10:00 am to inform each other of upcoming activities. At each meeting we have a program of interest, usually a musical performance.

Our main fundraiser is an Author's Luncheon in January to help support music in the schools. We also can be seen ushering for the 2nd and 5th grade concerts in the spring and as docents at the House of Design. Many members enjoy taking the Music Mobile to elementary schools and presenting orchestral instruments to 3rd grade students and listening to the excitement evident in students as they learn about a violin and other instruments we make available to them. Many of us enjoy attending other Committees’ fundraisers, the Fall Kick-Off in September, and the Annual Meeting in May.

By working together to support the goals of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, we each gain the personal satisfaction of helping to bring a love of music to many children who may not otherwise have that opportunity. We always welcome new members!

UPPER BAY COMMITTEE

Location: Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine, Mission Viejo and surrounding area
Meetings: 4th Tuesday, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon from September through May (no December meeting)

In the late 40s and 50s, a group of friends had been playing music together for fun or for rehearsing pieces they had to perform with local orchestras. After their friend, cellist Frieda Belinfante, founded Beacon Bay Committee, they founded Upper Bay, PSOC’s second Committee in 1957. Upper Bay is now the oldest Committee. Its members are still fervent music lovers, some taught music, most play one instrument or two and attend concerts. They meet in members’ homes, taking turns helping with refreshments. They enjoy "Coffee & Goodies" from 10 to 10:30am, have a short business meeting. Then, until 12 noon, the performers take over. We often have students from the Music Department at UCI (piano, strings, woods and voice sections) as well as guest speakers giving a lecture-performances. Every year, Tommy Phillips, the President and Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County pays a visit for a lively discussion about the past and upcoming concerts.

Members put a value on their "free time” by simply writing a check in February for the Committee's fundraising event. We form a small and warm international group. We travel a lot and help with the Youth Programs when we can. We are united by our love of music and desire to bring it to the children of Orange County. New members, ladies as well as gentlemen are always welcome.
