The concert-going experience is necessary to a complete education. Concerts and off-campus presentations for grades 2-12 students include an introduction to the band, an introduction to the symphony orchestra, world music concerts, art and history partnerships with local museums, and attendance at regular Philharmonic Society presentations of the world’s best orchestras.

IN-SCHOOL PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS



  • KINDERGARTEN-FIRST GRADE: Music and Movement Teacher Workshops

    Lively workshops for teachers who want to capture the creative process of music, integrating reading, math and motor skills. These workshops are presented as an in-service event at selected school districts.


  • SECOND-EIGHTH GRADE: Musical Me

    Musical Me is a daily CD listening program that exposes children to an extensive array of classical music throughout the school year. Teachers have pre-researched information to read and suggested questions to ask their students to supplement the CDs, encouraging in-depth learning and focused listening.


  • THIRD GRADE: Music Mobile

    The Music Mobile “fleet” consists of two fully equipped vans. Each is filled with instruments and visual aids that introduce the symphony orchestra and important musical concepts. Philharmonic Society docents present the program and allow the students to have a hands-on experience with the instruments..


  • FOURTH GRADE: California Journeys

    A program in conjunction with Mission San Juan Capistrano, Heritage Hill Historical Park, and Bowers Museum, taking students on a journey into the history of California, as well as its art and music.


  • FOURTH, FIFTH, and SIXTH GRADES: Musicians on Campus

    Professional brass, woodwind, percussion, and string groups visit elementary schools in the county for performances and demonstrations. Musicians on Campus is one of the largest programs of its type in the United States.


  • FOURTH, FIFTH, and SIXTH GRADES: Workshops and Assemblies

    As opportunities present themselves, the Society presents workshops and assemblies that coordinate with regular Philharmonic Society concert presentations.


  • FIFTH, and SIXTH GRADES: Flutes Across the World

    A six-day series of hour-long workshops led by ethnomusicologist and musician John Zeretzke, the program takes students on a journey of exploration, discovery and compassion as they make flutes—one to keep for themselves and one to give to a disadvantaged child.   • INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS: Ensembles on Tour

    Created to appeal to middle school students, this program features professional groups performing for the whole student body a variety of music styles and instrumentations. The program is presented in cooperation with the American Federation of Musicians.


  • INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS: Strike Up the Band

    a program of instrument and music/method provision, coupled with clinics and performances, in cooperation with the school’s instrumental music director.


  • HIGH SCHOOLS: Partnership with Orange County School of the Arts

    Gifted students at OCSA will meet with some of the artists in town for the Laguna Chamber Music Festival or other Philharmonic Society presentations, attending dress rehearsals, concerts, and enjoying backstage tours.



  • The Youth Music Education Programs of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County are partially funded by Anaheim Band Instruments (part of the Music & Arts Center family), the cities of Aliso Viejo and Mission Viejo, The Committees of the Philharmonic Society, the Crean Foundation, Disneyland Resort, the William Gillespie Foundation, the Huntington Harbour Cruise of Lights®, Macy’s, the Music Performance Trust Fund of the American Federation of Musicians, the Orange County Register, Pacific Life Foundation, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo Foundation, and the Philharmonic House of Design.
