Committees Member Spotlight

Kim Weddon
President, The Committees of the Philharmonic Society 2019-2020
Committee(s): Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee, La Casa Committee

What do/did you do for your career?
I taught 4th and 5th grades and ended my career with a management consulting firm as office manager, handling recruiting and marketing. It was like getting a mini-MBA!

When did you start volunteering as a Committees member?
I planned to volunteer as a tutor when I found the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Islander Group in 2003. As a former teacher I knew the arts were the first budget cuts and I connected with the mission to bring music to the schools. Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee’s Cruise of Lights® became my early passion!

In 2004 I found myself taking on Boutique Chairman for the House of Design. I was immediately hooked and joined La Casa as a secondary Committee. This led to participating in the last 15 design houses in roles as Benefit Chair, Ways & Means Chair, Interior Chair and Design Chair.

Do you have a favorite volunteer moment or memory?
Cruise of Lights® brings passengers from near and far. This year we had our first tail-gate party in the Mall parking lot! Their cheers were infectious for all of our volunteers and guests.

What is your favorite Philharmonic Society concert?
More Forever [with pianist Conrad Tao and tap dancer Caleb Teicher] was delightful but my favorite concert was the Royal Philharmonic.

Do you play any instruments?
I’m happy to have had the experience of playing in an orchestra, but I confess that I spent more time with my horse than my beautiful flute. Now I have fun creating imaginary music with an “air flute”.

What do you like to do for fun?
I love reading, concerts, theater outings and happy hour gatherings. I’m definitely a family girl and devoted grandma – I’m Kimmie to many! I have 6 grandchildren, 2 of them in Denver and 4 close by. I go to all their sports games and school activities. They’re my real contact as we shelter-in-place.

What's your favorite artist, song, or type of music?
Hands down my favorite is Elvis. Alexa plays a lot of Elvis gospel. Although I’m inclined to be stuck in the 60s with oldies music, I’m listening to more classical at home. I leave classical on for my dog when I’m gone and play it for hours when I return.

What's your favorite Philharmonic Society Youth Music Education Program and why?
No matter whether it’s 2nd or 5th graders, it’s heartwarming to watch students arrive at Segerstrom Concert Hall, many dressed up in their best. Their reaction to the magnificent concert hall is priceless. I love to watch the audience react to the concert!

Anything else you'd like to share?
My mother was a concert goer in Naples, FL and she would be delighted in my involvement with the Philharmonic Society. As President, I’m continually impressed with the talents, dedication and commitment of our volunteers, both in presenting our programs and fundraising. The icing on the cupcake is the camaraderie and close friendships I’ve found as a volunteer!
